Problem Statement and Motivation
-
Have you ever experienced the inconvenience of leaving your ID at home?

-
Tired of lugging around a bulging wallet?

-
Does the thought of misplacing your passport concern you?

If you're in search of a more streamlined solution, your search ends here! In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, our world is increasingly transitioning into a paperless era. Users are actively seeking efficient ways to digitize and reduce the reliance on physical documents. With this ongoing digital transformation we wanted to provide a comprehensive solution, exemplified by iDentity, that caters to the demands of modern digital users, facilitating the seamless transition away from paper documentation. Ultimately, our goal is to create an app that enables users to access their IDs and vital information securely with a simple tap on their smartphones.
01
Research Phase
When entering this project, our team's approach was to understand the pain points and problems that come along with modern-day identification challenges. We recognized the need for a solution that not only digitizes IDs but also prioritizes user-friendly accessibility, ensuring a seamless transition into the digital age. We came up with a main research question that served as a basis to our user research:

How beneficial would it be to have a digital ID for users?
Through our research and user interviews, we wanted to explore users’ habits when getting ready to leave the house, to get an understanding on how people use their phone everyday, and to learn how users feel about putting personal information online. In addition to the user interviews we conducted, we were eager to gain a deeper understanding of everyday users' habits and needs to reinforce the importance of our idea. To achieve this, we invited people to participate in surveys, allowing us to tap into a wide range of perspectives and gather valuable insights.
Key Takeaways from
User Interviews/Survey:
-
Phones are considered the most essential item for users.
-
Users are more inclined to use digital phone apps due to its convenience.
-
The greater the ease of performing a task for users, the higher their satisfaction.
-
When it comes to keeping confidential personal data secure in digital storage, the majority of users feel at ease.
-
Users place significant emphasis on security and privacy, especially when dealing with sensitive personal information.

"The worst thing for me to leave at home is my phone! It was everything I need!"
"I love apps like Apple Wallet, it makes everything so much easier!"
"I need to bring my passport with me when I go to a bar because I lost my wallet! It's so sad!"
How do you secure an app?
As security is paramount in our concept, our team conducted extensive research on app privacy and security. Furthermore, we sought to deepen our understanding of the digitization process for State Issued Identification cards and the necessary procedures for its successful implementation.
User Authentication

-
Passwords
-
PINs
-
Biometrics (fingerprint or facial recognition)
-
Two-factor authentication

Example:
Accessing your mobile device requires a PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition
Most digital banking accounts require two-factor authentication
Tokenization of Data

-
Cybersecurity team develops encryption and/or tokenization techniques to secure personal data

Example:
When using Apple Pay, tokenization is used where a unique device-specific number (token) is generated for each transaction instead of using the actual card number. In addition, biometric authentication or device passcode is required to authorize transactions.
Privacy Policy

-
Provides transparency to users about how personal information is collected, used, stored, and shared
-
Organization’s compliance with laws and regulations must be stated
-
User Consent must be given
-
User Rights are written within the policy
-
Outlines data security and protection policies of the organization

02
Definition / Ideation Phase
Through data analysis, we uncovered key trends in user behavior, app usage, and privacy concerns. Users prioritize features aligned with their values, particularly regarding data privacy and security. Insights into their "most important" apps provided further clarity on their needs. This understanding informed the creation of our user persona, Ian Duncan, who then formed the basis for iDentity.
Privacy/Security
Trusts apps to secure their data and personal info
Understands their are risks with uploading personal info online
Future Ideas
Wishes that phones have everything you need
Wishes to update ID online instead of going to the DMV
Essentials
Ranked Essentials: Phone, keys, wallet
Can't function with having a phone
Doesn't carry around wallet as much due to digital storage
Paper Docs
Everything is moving towards digital platforms
Would prefer e-docs vs. paper docs.
Current App Usage
Apple wallet is one of the most used apps
All preferred apps tend to be fast and easy to use
We compiled our User Interview notes into an Affinity Diagram that identified key topics and emerging trends. Specifically, we focused on security/privacy, future ideas, essentials, paper documentation, and current app usage relevant to our app concept. By delving into our users' motivations and ideas, we shaped specific ideologies for how our app should operate. This understanding then informed our development of the Empathy Map, providing deeper insights into our users' needs and experiences.
Meet Ian Duncan!
Our user persona, Ian Duncan, embodies the culmination of our user research and analysis. He represents the ideal audience for iDentity with his ambition, preference for a minimalist lifestyle, and easy-going nature. While Ian can be forgetful at times (like many of us!), he's on a mission to discover solutions that simplify life and enhance everyday experiences.

Gaining an Edge:
Conducting a competitor analysis was a vital component of grasping our competitive advantage. Our examination encompassed both direct and indirect competitors, including Apple Wallet, Arizona ID App, Google Pay, and Bank of America Banking App. Through this thorough analysis, we aimed to uncover their strengths, weaknesses, and strategies, offering valuable insights to guide our decision-making process. After identifying areas of weakness in our analysis, we chose to emphasize compatibility, security, privacy, and official recognition and acceptance in our project.

User Scenario:
After completing the analysis of our data, which provided valuable insights into our target audience, and conducting a thorough competitor analysis to understand the competitive market and gain an edge, we proceeded to develop a storyboard. This storyboard illustrated how our user persona, Ian Duncan, would respond in scenarios with and without our app. By contrasting Ian's experiences, we highlighted the benefits and impact of using our app.
User Story without iDentity

Ian arrives at the airport.

Upon arriving at security, Ian realizes he forgot his wallet and ID.

"This could have been avoided without iDentity."

Prototyping Phase
As we progressed into the wireframing and prototyping phase, we outlined a set of key priorities and aspects to emphasize during the development of iDentity. Our design decisions were thoughtfully shaped by the insights gathered from our comprehensive research and analysis.
Low Fidelity Prototype:
Our initial design focused on simplicity and ease of use for our users. Understanding the importance of quick use was very integral to our design. We came up with a simple main layout that would tie these ideas together. With this version, we also decided to add a feature that would allow other personal documents/ID’s to live in the app.
Usability Test Notes:
-
Users want a faster way to access iDentity
-
There was an overall positive response to the design layout
-
Users are more interested in the Onboarding Process
-
Users are curious about how secure the app will be

UI Style Guide & Final Design Decisions:
When designing the UI for iDentity, our goal was to attain a sleek, minimalist aesthetic that improves the user-friendliness of our application. As a result, we chose minimalist iconography, a bold yet simple color palette, and visually appealing illustrations. These design choices sought to improve the functionality of our app. With these thoughtfully selected design elements, users can effortlessly access our application quickly and efficiently.

04
Conclusion
In the beginning, our team had reservations about pursuing this project, primarily due to the paramount concerns surrounding security and privacy. However, as we delved deeper into the topic, it became evident that addressing digital identification was not only relevant but also imperative in today's ever-progressing technological landscape. We remained steadfast in our commitment to considering and respecting the essential local, state, and national permissions required for such an endeavor. As we reach the culmination of this project, we acknowledge that iDentity is still in its nascent stages with ample room for growth and development. The invaluable feedback we've received along this journey has proven instrumental in our progress. We are determined to heed all the comments and further refine our app's design, nurturing the hope that one day we can bring this transformative concept to life.
